Butt weld caps close the end of a pipe run. Explore the fitting details and material options, then specify the pipe size and wall thickness your project requires.

Sizes & dimensional standards ↓
PRODUCT OVERVIEW

A purpose-built closure for your pipe run

A cap forms a welded end closure. Its dimensions and material must match the piping specification and service requirements.

01 / THE CONNECTION

Prepared for a butt weld

The open end of the cap joins to the pipe end. Specify the connecting pipe dimensions and the required end preparation for technical review.

  • Identify the nominal pipe size and connecting outside diameter.
  • State the pipe wall thickness or schedule.
  • Include any special bevel or welding preparation requirements.
02 / THE PROFILE

A formed, closed end

The closed profile terminates the pipe run. Confirm the cap dimensions and available installation space against the applicable standard or approved drawing.

  • Check overall length and clearance in the piping layout.
  • Provide a drawing for non-standard dimensions.
  • Confirm material, inspection and documentation requirements.

A butt weld cap is a welded closure. If the end needs routine access or removal, the system designer should specify an appropriate removable closure arrangement.

APPLICATION CONTEXT

Designed into the piping layout

The project designer determines the closure arrangement and suitability for the intended service.

PIPE TERMINATIONS

Close a defined pipe end

Use the approved piping layout to identify end closures, connecting sizes and the space available for installation and welding.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you specify a cap

How is a butt weld cap connected?

The open end is welded to the pipe end. The project specification and welding requirements determine the end preparation and joining procedure.

Is a cap the same as a blind flange?

No. A butt weld cap forms a welded closure, while a blind flange is part of a bolted flange arrangement. The appropriate closure depends on the system design and access requirements.

Can I select a cap using pipe size alone?

Pipe size is only one part of the specification. Provide wall thickness, material grade, the applicable standard or drawing, and inspection requirements so the full requirement can be reviewed.

Can I enquire about a special cap profile?

Send a dimensional drawing and the material, service and inspection requirements. Availability and manufacturing feasibility need to be confirmed for the specific request.
